Dental Savings Plans: How They Work and What to Check First

How dental savings plans work, what to check before you buy, and how a membership plan differs: any dentist, a concierge who books, no annual maximum.

You looked at dental insurance, saw the waiting periods and the annual maximum, and went looking for something else. That search usually lands on dental savings plans. They are a real alternative, and for a lot of people a better one. They also have limits worth knowing before you pay for one.

Clear Care Dental is a dental membership plan, not insurance. It is related to savings plans, but it works differently in a few ways that matter. This page explains both, plainly, so you can pick the right one.

What a dental savings plan is

A dental savings plan, sometimes called a discount dental plan, is a membership you pay for monthly or yearly. In return you get reduced prices at the dentists who take part in that plan.

When you go to the dentist, you pay the reduced price yourself, at the visit. Nobody pays the dentist on your behalf, and there is nothing to send in afterwards.

It is not insurance. States regulate these plans under their own rules, separate from insurance, and several require a plan to register before it can be sold to residents.

What savings plans do well

  • No annual maximum. The plan does not pay your bills, so there is nothing to cap. A crown in March and a root canal in April both get the plan's price.
  • No claim forms. You pay the dentist and you are done.
  • No pre-authorization. Nobody outside the practice reviews your dentist's recommendation before treatment.
  • Usually no waiting period on the discounted prices. Check this per plan.

Those four things fix most of what people dislike about dental insurance.

Where savings plans fall short

  • You are limited to the plan's dentists. Most savings plans only work at participating practices. If your dentist is not on the list, you switch dentists or lose the discount.
  • The price is a fixed schedule. A plan publishes a list of reduced prices, and that is the price. Nobody calls the practice on your behalf.
  • You do the legwork. Finding a participating dentist, booking, and confirming the plan's price at the front desk is on you.
  • Nothing is included. You get a discount on cleanings and exams, not free ones.

How a membership plan is different

Clear Care keeps what savings plans get right (no annual maximum, no claim forms, no pre-authorization) and changes the parts above.

Typical dental savings plan Clear Care membership
Which dentist Participating dentists only Any dentist, including the one you already see
Price for treatment A fixed discount schedule Negotiated with the practice for your visit, by your concierge
Booking You call around Your concierge books it
Cleanings and exams Discounted Included every 12 months
Annual maximum None None
Claim forms None None

Any dentist. You pick the practice in the app. If your dentist has never heard of Clear Care, your concierge calls them. If a practice declines, your concierge finds another one near you the same day.

A negotiated price, shown before treatment. There is no fixed member rate for a procedure. Your concierge negotiates the price with the practice for that visit, and you see it in the app as a treatment plan before anything happens. You accept it or decline it.

Included visits. On the Individual plan, a comprehensive oral evaluation, a full set of X-rays and 2 routine cleanings are included every 12 months. If you pay monthly, those included visits start after 90 days. Member pricing on everything else starts the day you join, on either billing option.

The dentist is paid promptly. The practice is paid soon after your visit, not after the 30 to 90 days an insurance claim can take.

Plan prices and what is included are on the membership details page.

Questions to ask before you buy any plan

Whichever plan you look at, these five questions sort the good ones from the rest.

  1. Can I use my current dentist? If not, which participating dentists are near me, and are they taking new patients?
  2. What will my treatment actually cost? A savings plan should show its price schedule. A membership should show you a price before treatment.
  3. What is included, and from when? Look for the date benefits start on monthly and yearly billing.
  4. How do I cancel? Look for the cancellation terms before you enrol, not after.
  5. Is the plan allowed to sell where I live? Several states require dental savings plans to register. A legitimate plan can tell you.

Who a savings plan suits better

A traditional savings plan can be the better fit if your dentist already participates in one, you rarely need more than a cleaning, and you are happy to book everything yourself. If that is you, a low-cost plan with your dentist on the list is a fine choice.

A membership suits you better if you want to keep your current dentist, you have treatment coming up and want someone negotiating the price, or you would rather not spend an afternoon on the phone with front desks.

See real numbers first

Before you buy anything, it helps to know what dental work costs where you live. The cost pages show typical cash prices and negotiated ranges for common procedures in all 50 states and DC. They are estimates, not quotes, and they are a good way to sanity-check any plan's prices.

Questions people ask

Is a dental savings plan the same as dental insurance? No. A savings plan gives you reduced prices at participating dentists, and you pay the dentist yourself. Insurance pays part of the bill on your behalf, up to an annual maximum.

Is Clear Care a dental savings plan? It is a dental membership plan, not insurance. Like a savings plan, there is no annual maximum and nothing to claim. Unlike most savings plans, you can see any dentist, a concierge books and negotiates for you, and preventive visits are included.

Do savings plans have waiting periods? Many apply their discounts from day one, but check each plan. At Clear Care, member pricing starts the day you join. The included preventive visits start right away if you pay for the year, or after 90 days if you pay monthly.

Is Clear Care available in my state? Membership is available in all 50 states.

Can I use a savings plan and dental insurance together? Some people do, using insurance for what it pays toward and a plan for the rest. Read both plans' terms first; each sets its own rules.
